  38. alt conferences.

  40. The   following  conferences  are  desired,  together   with   an
  41. explanation of each:

  44.      This  is ParaNet's international UFO conference.   All  UFO-
  45. related subjects will be discussed within this conference.   This
  46. area is currently carried over ParaNet's own network and will  be
  47. gated  into  the alt group.  All traffic originating in  the  alt
  48. group  will be gated into the ParaNet network.   This  conference
  49. combines  active discussion on the phenomenon as well as  posting
  50. of  text-based  files or information as it becomes  available  to
  51. ParaNet.  Additionally, many recognized research groups use  this
  52. conference  for discussion.  These groups are located all  around
  53. the world.

  55. alt.paranet.paranormal
  56.      This is ParaNet's general paranormal discussion group.   All
  57. aspects  of  the  paranormal are  discussed  within  this  group.
  58. Again,  this conference is already in place within ParaNet's  own
  59. network.

  61. alt.paranet.abduct
  62.      This  conference concerns the alleged  world-wide  abduction
  63. phenomenon.   It  is moderated by Dr. David Jacobs,  a  respected
  64. author  of  two  UFO-related  books,  "The  UFO  Controversy   in
  65. America,"  and  recently,  "Secret Life," a  book  detailing  the
  66. abduction  phenomenon.  Jacobs is a history professor  at  Temple
  67. University  with  a considerable background in the  UFO  research
  68. community.   This  conference  is a  ParaNet  conference  and  is
  69. frequented  by  other international researchers of  note,  namely
  70. Keith  Basterfield  of  Australia,  who  published  a  paper   in
  71. psychological  journals concerning Fantasy Prone Personality  and
  72. the   Abduction   Scenario.   The  discussion   is   intelligent,
  73. informative and active.

  75. alt.paranet.askufo
  76.      This  conference  is a direct link between ParaNet  and  the
  77. publishers of UFO Magazine in California.  It is moderated by Don
  78. Ecker, Research Director for the magazine.
  79.  
  80. alt.paranet.skeptic
  81.      This conference is moderated by Anson Kennedy of the Georgia
  82. Skeptics Association.  It is primarily for the discussion of  the
  83. UFO  phenomenon  and how a skeptic views it.  The  discussion  is
  84. open-minded  and  challenges  those who tend  to  accept  the  ET
  85. hypothesis  out-of-hand  without  basis or  evidence.   Rules  of
  86. evidence  are  also  discussed and how the  UFO  community  could
  87. interface with the scientific community to instrument or  measure
  88. the phenomenon.

  90. alt.paranet.science
  91.      The  title of this conference is "Science on the Edge."   As
  92. it's  title implies, this conference deals with hard science  and
  93. physics   and  the  relationship  that  this  may  have   to   an
  94. understanding  of the UFO phenomenon.  It is moderated  by  Clark
  95. Matthews,  who  has a background in science and  regularly  posts
  96. articles on quantum physics and other science-related topics.
  97.  
  98. All  of  these conferences are unique to ParaNet in  quality  and
  99. composition and are very different from what is currently offered
  100. in the alt groups with similar titles.
  101.  
  102. Below  is  further  information  about  myself  and  ParaNet  for
  103. information  purposes.   It  is  our  desire  to  provide   these
  104. conferences  as an educational tool demonstrating what is  really
  105. known  (or  not  known) about  the  UFO  phenomenon.   Currently,
  106. ParaNet  maintains  a  large listserver  with  approximately  250
  107. names.  This has become unmanageable and further demonstrates the
  108. need for creation of these various alt groups.
  109.  
  110.                  BIOGRAPHY FOR MICHAEL F. CORBIN
  111.  
  112.      Michael  Corbin  is  36 years old  and  resides  in  Denver,
  113. Colorado.  Born and raised in the Denver metro area, Michael  has
  114. had  a very diverse background.  With an  accounting  background,
  115. Michael  operated  a real estate brokerage firm  specializing  in
  116. commercial property management for five years before assuming the
  117. helm of ParaNet Information Service as its owner and director.
  118.      Since 1988, Michael has built the organization into a multi-
  119. national  communications network specializing in distribution  of
  120. news  relating to the paranormal and UFOs.  The scope of  ParaNet
  121. has   increased  tremendously  to  the  point  of  providing   an
  122. international  forum  and communications link with  many  of  the
  123. international   researchers  and  investigators,  many  of   them
  124. luminaries  in  their  field.   ParaNet  has  grown  in  size  to
  125. appreciable portion and now provides an international gateway via
  126. Internet,  a global communications network owned and operated  by
  127. the National Science Foundation.  This link has provided a  real-
  128. time  point  of presence in the world allowing  the  movement  of
  129. time-sensitive information to virtually any ParaNet affiliate  in
  130. the world.
  131.      Among  some  of  ParaNet's  accomplishments  have  been  the
  132. creation  of  a moderated conference dealing with  the  abduction
  133. phenomenon,  hosted by author David Jacobs.  A direct  link  with
  134. UFO  Magazine and editors Vicki Cooper and Shari Stark  has  been
  135. established providing access by the public.
  136.      Michael has appeared on various television programs, several
  137. radio  talk shows, both local and national, and has  appeared  in
  138. various magazines.  In addition, Michael has written articles for
  139. publication.
  140.      Michael   has   recently   started   MICAP   (Multi-national
  141. Investigations Cooperative on Aerial Phenomena), an international
  142. research  organization  which  has  begun  many  "leading   edge"
  143. projects  interfacing the UFO research community with  mainstream
  144. scientific researchers to bring about a focused, global  research
  145. effort  to better understand the complexity that  the  phenomenon
  146. presents.
  147. About ParaNet...
  148.  
  149. PARANET:  FIVE YEARS AND COUNTING

  152. It may be a bit late to celebrate an anniversary that occurred on
  153. New Year's Day, but the premiere issue of CONTINUUM provides an
  154. opportune moment to recognize that ParaNet is now over five years
  155. old.  The chance to write about those first five years brings with
  156. it the temptation to spout off about ParaNet's lofty goals, to
  157. boast of its various accomplishments, and to reflect on those
  158. triumphs not yet realized.  Not being one to resist temptation ...
  159.  
  160. On January 1, 1986, a bulletin-board system (BBS) called "The
  161. Other Side" opened its doors to enquiring minds, featuring a type
  162. of information which had, at that time, never been gathered
  163. together for electronic mass consumption.  The modem world had not
  164. yet emerged from its MacLuhanesque infancy; very few BBSs of the
  165. time had ventured beyond the "games-and-utilities-for-download"
  166. stage.  The idea behind ParaNet was revolutionary, and yet long
  167. overdue; it was to be a BBS network:
  168.  
  169.   - which accomplished more than merely supporting the habits of
  170. computer addicts;
  171.  
  172.   - which not only _informed_, but _inquired_;
  173.  
  174.   - which covered a topic that desperately cried out for studious
  175. inquiry and wide-ranging dissemination:  the paranormal.
  176.  
  177. Thus was born ParaNet's first motto, which was also the embodiment
  178. of its basic goals:  "Answering Questions, Questioning Answers".
  179.  
  180. >From the beginning it was intended that ParaNet link together the
  181. three factions of paranormal debate:  the skeptics, the believers,
  182. and (most important of all) the undecided, which I believe
  183. includes the vast majority of Americans.  As ParaNet's first
  184. Director, I wanted it to be a place where those of us who had
  185. taken a firm position on the fence would feel comfortable, and
  186. would be able to benefit from public discussion of paranormal
  187. issues by the other two factions.
  188.  
  189. And so, from the start, I actively encouraged participation by
  190. skeptics and the unconvinced, as well as believers.  I think it
  191. was this promotion of ParaNet as neutral ground, tempered by our
  192. common-sense approach, that has contributed most to its reputation
  193. as a credible network.  This tradition has continued under the
  194. directorship of Michael Corbin, to whom I turned over the reins in
  195. 1988 due to equipment problems and time constraints.  Mike has
  196. actively sought and gained the participation of the Bay Area
  197. Skeptics (via the Skeptic's Board), the South Shore Skeptics (via
  198. Cleveland FreeNet), and other skeptics' groups.
  199.  
  200. Another goal which I saw as vital to ParaNet's success was to
  201. bring as many recognized investigators, authors, and researchers
  202. on-line as possible.  This was no small task, as most of the
  203. world's paranormal researchers had never heard of a modem at the
  204. time, let alone bought one or learned how to use it.
  205. Nevertheless, over the years ParaNet's bandwidth has been honored
  206. by communications from Marge Christenson, T. Scott Crain, Dan
  207. Drasin, Stan Gordon, Barry Greenwood, Budd Hopkins, Linda Howe,
  208. Phil Imbrogno, Dr. David Jacobs, Dr. Donald Johnson, Philip Klass,
  209. Bruce Maccabee, Maj. James McGaha, Dr. Mark Rodeghier, Robert
  210. Schaeffer, Tracy Torme, and Dr. David Webb--not to mention our own
  211. Don Ecker, who brings with him Vicki Cooper and our interface to
  212. the premiere trade publication, UFO Magazine.
  213.  
  214. I believe that both we and they have benefited from ParaNet's
  215. existence.  No researcher can operate in a void.  The
  216. investigator's raw material, in the form of sighting reports,
  217. comes from data supplied by "regular people", and there is
  218. probably no better way to stay in touch with regular people and
  219. keep one's fingers on the pulse of UFO activity than through a
  220. computer network.  The network concept provides the investigator
  221. with immediacy, one-on-one contact, and instant access to a global
  222. communications medium.  Best of all, the same advantages apply to
  223. the rank-and-file user, placing him on a communicative par with
  224. the big-name researcher--something not possible with conventional
  225. media such as journals and newsletters.  It is hoped that these
  226. advantages will have a "snowball" effect, attracting more
  227. researchers, who will attract more users, who will provide more
  228. raw information, which will attract more researchers, and so on--
  229. until eventually ParaNet becomes the "network of record" for the
  230. anomalistics field.
  231.  
  232. Of course, the "network advantage" was also bound to attract
  233. people of a more disruptive nature, and as a result ParaNet's
  234. bandwidth has also been graced by the presence of provocateurs and
  235. troublemakers.  But ultimately the network's collective wisdom
  236. prevailed over the disrupters, simply by allowing them to hang
  237. themselves with their own words in a public forum.  ParaNet
  238. survived the incursion, and may even be healthier for it.
  239.  
  240. Another accomplishment that ParaNet can be proud of is its timely
  241. reporting of major, fast-breaking stories, often beating
  242. mainstream and even trade media to the punch.  The first of these
  243. was the unfortunate death of J. Allen Hynek, the founder of the
  244. Center for UFO Studies.  By happenstance, I found out about it
  245. from a secondary source, confirmed it, and ran his obituary on
  246. ParaNet a full day before it hit the press wires.  While bearing
  247. bad tidings is nothing to brag about, it did prove the viability
  248. of the computer network as a news medium.
  249.  
  250. Then, in January of 1987, I got wind of what was being termed a
  251. "major breakthrough" in the Cosmic Watergate.  Piecing together
  252. conversations with Bill Moore, Bruce Maccabee, and Barry
  253. Greenwood, I put out the word over ParaNet that the upcoming
  254. "breakthrough" probably involved something called "MJ-12".  Sure
  255. enough, in March of that year Moore released the first "sanitized"
  256. version of the Majestic 12 documents--and ParaNet was the first
  257. mass medium to publish them.  It would be a full two months before
  258. most other people in the UFO community would even hear of MJ-12.
  259. Thankfully, it wasn't more than a few months later that we
  260. published a series of strong caveats about the veracity of the
  261. documents, and we _never_ took a position endorsing their
  262. validity.
  263.  
  264. Other notches on ParaNet's gun include the JAL 747 "Encounter over
  265. Alaska" (thanks to a contact in Japan), the first reporting of the
  266. results of the testing on the Shroud of Turin (thanks to a slip by
  267. one of the researchers involved in the test), and the identity of
  268. Gulf Breeze's "Believer Bill" (thanks to the detective work of
  269. Mike Corbin).  More such scoops are in the offing, and may be
  270. breaking on-line by the time you read this.
  271.  
  272. One of our proudest accomplishments is our reach into foreign
  273. lands.  Thanks to the tremendous growth initiated by Mike Corbin,
  274. ParaNet can now be accessed in six countries on three continents.
  275. And it is entirely possible that by the time this magazine goes to
  276. press, there will be a ParaNet node up and running in St.
  277. Petersburg, Russia.  I think we can all agree that ParaNet is much
  278. more useful because it reflects the global nature of UFOs and
  279. anomalistics.
  280.  
  281. Which brings me to the part where I fret about those goals we have
  282. yet to accomplish.  Briefly, over the next five years I would
  283. personally like to see ParaNet:
  284.  
  285.   - establish a major presence in more countries, especially
  286. Japan, Belgium, Brazil, Peru, and South Africa;
  287.  
  288.   - establish a vigorous investigative arm, with "ready teams" in
  289. place to track down sightings and other claims;
  290.  
  291.   - promulgate investigative standards that are palatable to all
  292. sides, so that the results of our investigations are viewed with
  293. respect;
  294.  
  295.   - establish a press liaison office, and perhaps even a wire
  296. service, so that the mainstream press need not fish around in the
  297. dark for the definitive word on a paranormal story;
  298.  
  299.   - establish a Congressional liaison office, or perhaps just a
  300. regular publication to quietly and reliably keep Congress informed
  301. on the major issues;
  302.  
  303.   - begin to delve more deeply into other anomalies, including
  304. crop circles, surface features on Mars, Bigfoot, ghosts, and other
  305. mysteries.  We need not take a position one way or the other; I'd
  306. simply like to see us carry more information on these topics.

  310. Overall, and most important, I'd like to see ParaNet establish
  311. itself as the "network of record" for the field of anomalistics.
  312. I believe we have truly come a long way toward accomplishing that
  313. goal, and it would be a shame to come up short now.  For once
  314. that's accomplished, we will be one step closer to achieving that
  315. ultimate, most elusive of goals:  Finding the Answers.
  316.  
  317. For that, of course, ParaNet will need the cooperation of as many
  318. of you as possible.  In the end, the network is only as good as
  319. the people who use it.  We thank all of you for contributing to
  320. the growth of ParaNet over the past five years; and we hope you
  321. will continue to use the network and benefit from it, so that we
  322. can maintain our stature as "the world's most important computer
  323. network."

  327. are created.
